Design Concept:
The word that connected all of us to this piece was "yearning" - the universal human plight for transcendence, enlightenment, meaning, purpose. There is a pull between our earthly bounds and our cosmic dreams. That yearning is present in both the Greek Myths and the Christian Hymns that make up this unique song cycle; while there is no throughline between songs or narrative plot, we sought to create a connection with the feeling of yearning and the simple act of storytelling.
The scenery and projections for this piece worked to blend all of the seemingly incongruous songs together. The modern world bleeds into an ancient scene. Worldly elements of clay, fabric, and stone unite in contrast with an expansive and untouchable cosmos. Constellations are connected in the stars, drawing the figures our characters as we dive into their narratives.
In projection, earth, water, air, and fire represent our earthly bounds, while the moon, sunrises and sunsets, clouds, cosmos, and constellations represent our heavenly aspirations.
